The Hammer Rookie and Auto

While I still have an amazing addition to share with you thanks to a deal with Casey from The House of Oglethorpe, I decided to wait because it is tough to get it scanned so I will take the lazy approach.

As part of a more recent deal, I landed three cards from Casey and these two have much in common. They are the same guy! Dave Schultz is a player my step-father introduced to me along with many other enforcers in the NHL and it was his love for The Hammer that I picked up these two cards.

06-07 Parkhurst Dave Schultz Auto (regular)
In this set that I am loving more and more by the year Dave has two autos. The first is this card and the second is his Enforcers card. I like this one just enough to add it to my collection and I will certainly be keeping this one for good! For a guy that set an NHL record with 472 PIM in one season, he has a beautiful autograph so those hands aren't just cement. Dave also scored 20 goals in one season and did win two Cups with the Flyers.

73-74 OPC Dave Schultz Rookie
As amazing as the auto is, this rookie card was the biggest acquisition as far as the deal goes. The card isn't mind but at the same time the only thing wrong with the card is the nice OPC choppy cut which I actually like because you get more card than you pay for! This card is the light back version which is more than enough for me so don't expect any dark back rookie posts any time soon. Really happy to add these two and I hope to get all caught up on my Casey posts soon. Also have a few more to catch up on so please bear with me!

Trade with Brett from My Hockey Card Obsession

Sometimes to make progress forwards, you need to take a step back. A while ago, Brett from My Hockey Card Obsession showed off some pretty good trade bait and I was hooked like a fish! While I didn't have any cool Lindens to offer, I knew I had some HOF autos I could give up. Given his prolific rate of accumulating HOF autos the task was a little harder than first thought but I had an ace in the hole and it was enough to make a deal. While I gave up my  only Steve Yzerman auto, I did land another HOF auto and some other cool stuff. My plan for Mr. Yzerman is to try and land a less valuable ITG auto and one hopefully with a game used piece with it to make my HOF trifecta. In the meantime, here is what Steve brought home for me!

06-07 Parkhurst Marcel Pronovost Auto
A hall of fame auto is exactly what I was hoping for and this one is of stay at home defenseman Marcel Pronovost. Not a household name in my house but he does have a pretty rich hockey history and players like him were the backbones of a few Stanley Cups. Marcel won 5 during his 20 year career.

11/12 ITG Ultimate Memorabilia 11th Edition 600th Goal Gartner/Terreri
These NEVER scan well and I am too lazy to use my camera. This is a gem in person and I now have a Gartner Auto, Rookie and Stick which is pretty great in my books. I also have my first game used Chris Terreri which is equally cool to me and I am guessing there won't be many more featuring old Chris so I was glad to get this one. My only gripe is I was secretly wishing it was the Jersey and Stick from the 600th goal....but I suspect that stick is safe somewhere else.

13/14 Dominion Patch/Auto Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
After landing his auto via TTM, I was still wanting an authentic Nuge auto and one with his current number 93. So this was the card that got me fired up to make a trade and is the centerpiece of the transaction. While I have had custom cards made by Brett before, this is actually our first of what I am hoping will be many trades. Thanks for everything Brett and take care until the next one!

06-07 Parkhurst Edgar Laprade Auto

My next series of posts (because for some reason I think a theme is a good idea) is about HOF autographs! I think I have a little over a week's worth of HOF autos I have landed in the past year that I haven't shared online yet. So unlike the Sweet Shot posts, these may be a little more interesting to some so please, come back!

The first is an auto I already have, but am fixing an unfortunate error. I mailed away a New York Rangers card from the 08-09 OPC set because I didn't have any cards of Edgar Laprade that I was willing to lose in a TTM request. However, what I didn't anticipate was he would sign the back of the card which wasn't prepped by me and therefore smudged when he signed it. Believe it or not, it actually bothered me that the auto wasn't perfect. I didn't hold any ill will against anyone but myself for that one. So, being the patient guy I am, I kept waiting and creeping on eBay auctions. I had seen the same one time and time again go with no bids by a dealer who I believe was pretty reputable. Finally I wrote him and said, "hey if this auction doesn't sell, would you take 4 bucks with shipping for that card?" He wrote back pretty fast and said bid on it and if you win, then yes. So I bid and yes I won! So here is what it was, a base card of Edgar Laprade from the 06-07 Parkhurst set.

06-07 Parkhurst Edgar Laprade Auto Base Card
I had much interest in this card because he is from my hometown and he is a HOF'er. From what I read, he wasn't a super amazing offensive superstar, but rather a very talented two-way player who worked very hard on the ice and was a former Rookie of the Year winner and Lady Byng Trophy winner. Because he served his country in WWII, he was a little later arriving in the NHL but he was very good Senior Hockey player before enlisting and was a four-time NHL All-Star.

So we kick off another theme, I promise some pretty sweet autos before this is all over and through!

BTW for those interested, there is an auto insert parallel in the 06-07 Parkhurst set for those looking for a certified auto. However, Edgar is a very gracious TTM signer and I would recommend anyone to write him because he does enjoy the fan mail!

06-07 Parkhurst JP Parise Auto

The prize pig of the whole lot of 12 cards was this auto from the 06-07 Parkhurst set. The toploader is a little filthy, but I have since fixed that problem and I love the card. JP was actually born about 40 minutes away from where I lived all through High School and I even played in a couple golf tournaments in his hometown of Smooth Rock Falls. I don't recommend it has a tourist destination, but there are many fine people that do live there.

JP was a very solid NHL player who is best remembered for the '72 Series in my opinion, though he did make two NHL all-star games and had cracked the 20 goal barrier 5 times. His son Zach was the Devils captain last season before bolting to Minnesota. I like and respect JP a lot and having his auto was a must. This was the most expensive of the lot costing me nearly 5 dollars with the shipping.

A very nice auto much like Zach's and done in blue sharpie. I actually have two Zach autos which I will have to share in the near future....only makes sense right?
