A Load of Legendry Lumber

The 1960's were the final decade of the Original 6 and the golden age of hockey. Expansion would happen in 1967 and change the game forever. With that being said, hockey is still amazing today no matter who you are and while fights are down and talent is up, fans in the 60's were spoiled with some amazing players including these 4 guys:

2017 Leaf Stickwork Decade Leaders Points 1960s /25

Four NHL legends who are all HOFers on one card is cool. Having a game used piece of them is even cooler. The only thing that would have topped this in my opinion is a signature or four. However, it's still a nice piece and I enjoyed landing it. Two neat bits though, first is who is the leader of these four for the decade called the 1960s? I don't believe I would have ever guessed it myself:

By a pretty large margin (41 points) the winner is Stan Mikita. What's equally interesting to me is Stan also had more PIMs than the other three and the most assists.

While the card itself just features for generic pieces of wood which would be it's loan downfall in my opinion, its a relatively low production run makes up for that a bit. Second neat fact is ITG originally made the card in 2014 and it was released by Leaf in 2017 as apart of their Stickwork release.

72-73 OPC Team Canada Series 2 Insert - Stanislav Mikita

What I believe to be the biggest disappointment for Team Canada at the Summit Series was the absence of Bobby Orr. At the time, he was the best player on the planet. However, the next biggest disappointment I believe is the under-utilization of Stan Mikita. This guy had four Art Rosses, two Harts and a Stanley Cup yet at the age of 32 he was only used in 2 games. I think he could have had a huge impact (with all due respect Harry Sinden) however I guess it wasn't meant to be. Really a slap in the face if you ask me...

Stan Mikita Game Used

When I got back into collecting a five years ago, "jersey cards" were something I thought was amazing and I was totally enamored with them. Now that my collection is littered with this cards, I still like them, but I am getting more picky about them. The price needs to be right, or they need to be cool, unique or matter to me. At my local card shop, I found a card that was priced right ( 3 bucks), was hella cool and mattered a fair bit. 

11-12 Panini Limited Retired Numbers Stan Mikita /99

Here is the front. First off, he is a legend. This card is classy looking and the swatch (albeit white) is large and you can tell it is old.

When you look at the back, you see it is numbered out of 99 which is a decent print run and the swatch is actually GAME USED. This means the jersey piece is at least as old as I am. This is just a cool card for a cool price. I really wish more of these cards were around because I would snap them up all day long. As much as getting ANOTHER Jason Allison game used jersey is cool, swatches of Steve Shutt, Stan Mikita or Marcel Dionne are far more interesting to a collector like myself.

Besides, how many of you are thinking Donuts when you hear Stan Mikita? I know I do! Party Time! Excellent!
