08-09 UD Masterpieces Steve Shutt auto

Here is the second of a few consecutive posts on deals I have made with Casey from The House of Oglethorpe. This one is featuring an amazing autograph of Hall of Fame player Steve Shutt. While I don't have his rookie card yet, I know I need his auto for my Hall of Fame PC so this card is an excellent addition to the collection.

Great autograph and an even nicer photo. I love the helmetless look from the old days and the framed canvas look gives the card a much cooler (almost museum) look. The signature is just fantastic and in some ways I wish more players had beautiful penmanship like Steve. While Steve didn't have the longest NHL career, he did win 5 Stanley Cups and had 30+ goals in 9 of his 13 NHL seasons. Included in those seasons was one where he set the NHL record for most goals by a LW (60 goals). That record eventually was topped by the NHL all-time leading scorer at LW, Luc Robitaille who had 63 in 1993. Alex Ovechkin bettered that record by two in 2008.

Casey of House of Oglethorpe Gives Me More Than I Bargained For

Casey of Drop The Gloves House of Oglethorpe had struck a deal with me for a card that he offered up from his collection. I agreed to an awesome deal and when it arrived,  it arrived with some extra coolness. The card which which was the focus of the deal,  I will share at a later date. Here are extras that arrived with it and I can't thank Casey enough for his kindness and generosity.

08-09 UD Masterpieces Alex Delvecchio Brushstrokes Brown Auto

This is the set that sparked the canvas craze in current UD products. Originally Masterpieces was product done all in the style of canvas (base and inserts). Alex has a great on card auto here with a photo that UD has over used but the design of the card more than makes up for it. If you notice Alex's stick, there were clearly rations on hockey tape back in the late 60s and early 70s.

2001-02 BAP Signature Series Igor Larionov

Here is another gift from Casey. NHL HOF'er all round winner Igor Larionov.
Check out this resume:
2 time WJHC Gold medalist
4 time World Champion
1 time Canada Cup Champ
2 time Olympic Gold Medalist
Olympic Bronze Medalist
and 3 time Stanley Cup Champion.

For a player who spent most of his prime playing in Russia, he came over to Canada at the age of 29 and rattled off 14 pretty impressive NHL seasons. This also completes another HOF'er off my RC/Memorabilia list. Like most collectors I have dozens of Larionov rookies it was much harded to land the auto than the rookie here.

Thank you very very much Casey for the beautiful additions and I will soon share the center piece of our deal.

A Couple Masterpieces

It seems my LCS is adding singles by the day and that means for fun finds and great deals. I was in a little while back, just browsing for a particular card and I ended up leaving with a small stack so I guess that means I get a few extra posts for my dollar! One set I never collected is the 08-09 UD Masterpieces set. I wasn't a fan of the price/hit ratio and I figured as time would go by, deals might eventually arise.

Here are two little gems that set me back about 7 dollars total.

08-09 UD Masterpieces Canvas Clippings Scotty Bowman

The greatest coach in NHL history (according to me)! This is actually a game used swatch of something, (tie maybe?) and I love it. I remember getting my 74-75 OPC Bowman rookie was a kid and thought it was one of the best cards in the world. He would go on to win MORE Stanley Cups which just boggles the mind how he can do it year in and year out with so many different clubs.Truly one of the best hockey minds the game has ever known.

08-09 UD Masterpieces Canvas Clippings Richard Brodeur

If I was to tell you one of these cards was event used, would you have guess it was the Brodeur? Crazy, but I guess his game used jerseys are harder to come by or something. Just a really cool looking card, I couldn't leave this card behind for 2 dollars.

If you have a chance to get a good deal on a Canvas Clippings, snatch it up. The designs are just awesome and they look good whether you are into game used or not! They are certainly one of the better designs I have seen from that particular year.
