For me, I would nail this with just two cards:
The first is a PSA 7 Wayne Gretzky Topps rookie which would be perfect for my 79/80 Topps Set that I am building. This card is on eBay, click card for link at a BIN price of just $399, a great deal if you ask me.
The second would be a PSA 3 Gordie Howe rookie which also would be perfect for my 51-52 Parkhurst set I am building. This card has a cool BIN price of 1200 dollars thus exhausting my 1600 dollars for the contest.
Thanks Casey for the contest and if you want to participate just go to this link:
Couple of great choices there! I think a smaller number of high dollar cards would indeed be the way to go if you stumbled upon that kind of cash.
ReplyDeleteThanks! If only I could make it come true :)
DeleteWell, you certainly can't go wrong with two rookies of two of the all-time greats.
ReplyDeleteWould you rather have a lower grade OPC Gretzky rookie or a higher grade Topps one? Just curious.
Great question, I have thought about it a lot and I think it boils down to cash...
DeleteIf I had 600 bucks, I would totally go Topps because I think a Near-Mint Topps is far better to own than an EX OPC one. However, if I had 1200 bucks, you would then be looking at Near-Mint OPC and GEM Mint Topps and in that case, I would take the OPC.
Condition is a big factor to me when spending that cash so I will likely go for the better card to a point, I don't need GEM mint, but an EX condition Gretzky would bother me especially after spending that much money.
Follow up question that is sort of related and unrelated at the same time:
ReplyDeleteWould you want an OPC Gretzky rookie that has the (in)famous OPC rough cut?
I sometimes feel like a vintage OPC isn't really a vintage OPC unless it has that rough cut edge somewhere.
Funny you would mention that, I am eventually doing a post on rough cuts...but I wouldn't be upset with a rough cut at all. Creases and corner dings are the two defects that would bother me the most.
DeleteHow about you? Topps vs OPC, condition?
thanks for share..
